PIPING AND DRUMMING
Band and solo piping and drumming competitions are held at almost every Scottish festival in the world to give serious musicians the opportunity to measure themselves against others at their expertise level (grade) and to get evaluations, advice and suggestions from the judges who are among the best pipers and drummers in the world. The general rules which govern these contests are defined by Regional Pipe Band Associations. KSW competitions are sanctioned and regulated by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, EUSPBA. HIGHLAND DANCING
Scottish Highland dancing is one of the oldest forms of folk dancing from which both modern ballet and square dancing can trace their roots. Dating back to the 11th or 12th century, the highland dances of Scotland were highly athletic dances of celebration, triumph or battle with some being performed over swords or spiked shields. Originally they were performed and later competed by men only. According to tradition, Kings and Scottish Chiefs of old used highland games as a means to select the best men for their services. Highland dancing was one way of testing them for strength, stamina, accuracy and agility. Later, Scottish military regiments used Highland dancing as a form of training. Today, Scottish military divisions continue to incorporate highland dancing and piping into their regimen. Click here for the entry form.

ATHLETICS
The Scottish Athletic Events are as unique to Scotland as are tartan and bagpipes. Almost any person you ask will know them as, “those guys who play with telephone poles.” The seven events traditionally contested have a long history, with their origins hidden by the mists of time. While a few may have been contested as feats of strength by soldiers vying for positions in the Military, we suspect that they really started of with, “Hey, y’all, watch this!” Over the years, rules have evolved, and are followed by the men and women who compete in the “Heavy Events.” Click here for the entry form.
